Scholarship Guide
The complete guide to funding your studies in China — scholarship types, the application process, and documentation tips to maximize your chances.
Six ways to get funded in China
Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC)
The flagship national scholarship. Full tuition, accommodation, stipend (¥2,500–3,500/mo) and insurance. Apply via embassy or host university.
Provincial & City Scholarships
Regional governments (Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Guangdong…) fund international students at local universities.
University Scholarships
Each university offers its own partial and full scholarships for international applicants — the most common route.
Confucius Institute Scholarship
For Chinese language (HSK) and teaching students. Covers tuition, accommodation, stipend and insurance.
Enterprise Scholarships
Companies fund students in targeted fields (MBA, tech, energy) with potential job offers after graduation.
Belt & Road Scholarship
For students from BRI countries, covering full tuition and living costs at participating universities.
How to apply for a scholarship
Choose your scholarship route
Decide between CSC (embassy or university channel), provincial, or university-direct scholarships.
Confirm eligibility
Check nationality, age limits, degree level, GPA and language requirements for each scholarship.
Gather documents
Notarized diplomas, transcripts, recommendation letters, study plan, language certificate, medical form, passport.
Apply before the deadline
CSC: Dec 15 – Mar 31. University scholarships: Feb – May. Submit online and track status.
Interview (if required)
Some scholarships require an online interview with the university or embassy.
Accept & receive JW202
On approval, receive your admission letter and JW201/JW202 form for your visa.
Documents you'll need
Notarize early
Notarization + translation can take 2–3 weeks. Start before application season.
Tailor the study plan
A specific, well-researched study plan beats a generic one. Reference the university and program.
Strong recommendations
