China's high-speed rail network is the world's largest. Students can book tickets via the 12306 app or Trip.com. Remember to bring your original passport for ticket collection and station entry, as digital tickets are standard.
How to ride China's high-speed rail as a student — booking, classes, student discounts and station tips.
China's high-speed rail (HSR) network is the largest in the world — over 40,000 km of track connecting almost every major city. For students, it is the cheapest, fastest and most scenic way to travel.
Why take the HSR
- Speed: 250–350 km/h — Shanghai to Beijing in 4.5 hours, faster than flying when you include airport time
- Price: student-class fares are a fraction of a flight — often USD 15–80 per trip
- Punctuality: trains run on time, almost always
- Comfort: spacious seats, power outlets, food trolleys, clean bathrooms
- Scenery: the countryside is part of the experience
How to book
- 12306 app — the official rail booking app; set up an account with your passport
- Trip.com / Ctrip — easier English interface, small booking fee
- Station ticket window — bring passport; good for last-minute trips
Ticket classes
- Second class (二等座) — the standard, comfortable and cheap
- First class (一等座) — wider seat, more legroom, ~60% more expensive
- Business class (商务座) — lie-flat luxury; rarely worth it for students
- Standing (无座) — only on fully booked trains; avoid for long trips
Student discounts
Enrolled international students with a student concession card (issued by the university) can buy discounted hard-seat and second-class tickets for designated trips during term breaks — usually a 25% discount on one-way fares. Confirm with your university's student office.
At the station
- Arrive 30–40 minutes early for security and boarding
- Bring your passport — it is your ticket; gates scan it directly
- Security is fast (bag scan, ID check)
- Boarding closes ~5 minutes before departure
Luggage
- Each passenger gets ~20 kg free; large suitcases fit in the end-of-car racks
- Smaller bags go in the overhead shelf above your seat
Tips
- Book Golden Week (Oct 1–7) and Spring Festival trips months ahead — tickets sell out in seconds
- For long trips (8+ hours), overnight sleeper trains (soft sleeper) are still a great budget option
- The HSR is the single best way to see China — use it for weekend trips between your university city and neighbours
Once you've taken one high-speed train, you'll never want to fly between Chinese cities again.
