To set up WeChat Pay and Alipay, download the apps, register with your phone number, and verify your identity using your passport. You can then link a Chinese bank card or eligible international credit card to start paying.
How to set up WeChat Pay and Alipay as a student in China — foreign cards, Chinese bank accounts and day-to-day payments.
China is the world's most cashless society — almost everything is paid by scanning a QR code. Setting up WeChat Pay and Alipay correctly is one of the most important things you'll do in your first week.
WeChat Pay vs Alipay
Both are QR-code payment apps accepted almost everywhere. Most merchants accept both, but having both set up is the safe choice.
- WeChat Pay — built into WeChat; pay friends, shops, utilities and tuition
- Alipay — broader for services, transport, hospital bills and international transfers
Option 1: link a foreign bank card
Both apps now let you link a foreign Visa or Mastercard (with some fees and limits):
- Add your card in WeChat Pay → Cards or Alipay → Bank Cards
- Single-transaction limit is typically CNY 200 for foreign cards in many cases
- Fine for small purchases; not ideal for tuition or rent
Option 2: open a Chinese bank account
For amounts over CNY 200, you'll want a Chinese bank account:
- Bank of China, ICBC, China Merchants Bank are the most foreigner-friendly
- Bring your passport, student letter, admission notice and a small deposit
- Get a UnionPay debit card on the spot
- Link it to WeChat Pay and Alipay — limits disappear
How to pay day-to-day
- Scan the merchant's QR with WeChat/Alipay (most common)
- Show your QR to be scanned (some merchants prefer this)
- Transfer to a person via WeChat (splitting bills, paying a landlord)
- Tuition and dorm fees — usually paid by bank transfer or a university-specific Alipay mini-program
Currency and transfers
- Track exchange rates with the XE app
- International transfers in are slow and limited; plan ahead for large transfers
- Never carry large amounts of cash — it is unnecessary and unsafe
Once your bank card is linked, daily life in China is effortless: tap, scan, done. It is the most convenient payment system in the world.
